WELCOME to the Western Montana Search Dogs website!

Western Montana Search Dogs, (WMSD) is a volunteer non profit organization based in Gallatin County, MT.  Our teams are dedicated to providing certified search dog teams to requesting agencies.  We have specially trained dog / handler teams that work together with other SAR resources to provide a professional response to search and recovery events.

Teams are available for incidents on a 24-hour call-out system through the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department at (406) 582-2100  x2.

WMSD teams are specially trained and certified in:

  • Avalanche
  • Cadaver/human remains  recovery
  • Trailing/tracking
  • Water recovery
  • Airscenting/wilderness search
  • Article/evidence search
  • One LE team is also drug detection certified through NPCA

WMSD team members are trained to work independently in field operations to include radio communications, GPS operations, map and compass, search strategy and scene safety / preservation.  Each team completes certification standards in each facet according to the Tri-State K9 Search Standards, which can be found at http://www.tri-state-k9.org .  Our members are also active in other local SAR activities, such as Hasty Team, Alpine Rescue, Hamm Radio, snowmobile rescue, and Sheriff's Posse.  All handlers are medically trained to a minimum of First Responder.  Most of our handlers have trained multiple dogs, and we can provide years of experience to assist on missions.

Our teams train regularly with other SAR resources, and we work in an IC based system with LE, foot searchers, CAP, boat operators, horse teams, snowmobiles and 4 wheelers.  Typical searches include overdue hikers, missing children, suicide recoveries, drownings, avalanche response, and cold-case cadaver searches.
